Volkswagen Group Expands Electric and Hybrid Lineup in 2025 and Beyond
The Volkswagen Group, through its official channels, has outlined its vision for 2025, aiming to become a prime example of sustainable mobility. The company's mission is to excel across three pillars: fuel-efficient engines, pure electric vehicles, and hybrid drives.
This ambition will be pursued in tandem with efforts to further electrify the brand's lineup. In 2025 alone, the Group plans to introduce several new models, including a forthcoming Explora L (scheduled for March release), Quester L, and new Avant models arriving later in the year.
The expansion of electrification will focus on fuel-efficient vehicles as its core offering, which will continue to drive innovation in the automotive sector. A total of 21 new or revised models will be launched between 2025 and 2026, comprising four hybrid powertrains, three battery-electric platforms, four plug-in hybrids (not currently available for existing models), and eight annual updates.
In conjunction with this growth strategy, Volkswagen is actively migrating oil-engine vehicles toward more digitalized models. The aim is to continue the company's drive toward a sustainable transportation future through the development of innovative technologies.
Electricity is also expected to play an increasingly important role in automotive market competition during 2025 and 2026, particularly from offerings including new battery-electric cars, plug-in hybrids, and gasoline powertrains augmented by hybridization or mild-hybrid technologies. Additionally, Volkswagen's subsidiary brand, Skoda, plans to unveil its first-generation electric models before the end of 2025.
In other aspects of development, key technologies such as adaptive cruise control, lane-centering, driver assistance, smart charging systems and vehicle-to-grid services will be further integrated into model designs across a portfolio that includes Skoda and Volkswagen in all regions, offering better mobility solutions tailored to individual customer needs.
Target sales are projected at 1.4 million units for 2025, continuing a strong upward trajectory toward sustainable growth strategies worldwide, including the expansion of global markets and product offerings designed to address diverse market requirements across continents.
With strategic investments totaling some $18 billion in research and development initiatives aimed at strengthening Volkswagen Group's digital capabilities by opening six major technology centers that will accelerate electrification innovation while providing innovative technologies for autonomous driving systems, vehicle networking architectures, manufacturing production processes for energy-efficient battery charging systems for internal combustion vehicles as well as integrated mobility services platforms.
The company also aims to open its first smart charging infrastructure on two of these sites, allowing customers to charge their own electric models from a central place.
