Uber and WeRide Launch Autonomous Ride-Hailing Service in Abu Dhabi
In a major breakthrough, ride-hailing giant Uber Technologies, Inc. has partnered with Chinese autonomous driving company WeRide to launch its first automated drive service outside of the United States. The service, which began operations in the United Arab Emirates' capital city of Abu Dhabi, marks a significant milestone for the two companies and represents one of the largest commercial operations of robotaxi cars globally.
Following close collaboration with Abu Dhabi's Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), Uber plans to expand its automated ride-hailing service across various regions. Tawasul Transport will act as the operational partner, providing transportation services for the fleet. Customers using Uber X or Uber Comfort services in Abu Dhabi can now book a ride on WeRide's Robotaxi autonomous vehicles.
At present, automated driving cars from WeRide will only be offered to users requesting those services through the app. Initially covering core areas such as Satiat Island and Yas Island, plus routes connecting Abu Dhabi International Airport, with broader regions set for expansion in due time.
WeRide plans on staff training their vehicles with trained safety officers to enhance a comprehensive experience that sets higher standards for 2025 when transitioning completely to unmanned services. Uber users willing to take an interest in travelling within self-driving cars can adjust settings on the app’s “ride preferences” section where they may choose robotaxi vehicle service, thereby increasing chances of matching WeRide automated rides.
Aiming high on safety standards with compliance aligned with Uber's Safety guidelines and plans for constant monitoring during operational use, Wider confidence across customers will be maintained through rigorous operations.
