Surprisingly Inspired: The Secret Behind Smart Sprites 5 - Hybrid Edition

Smart's Five-Seat Hybrid Smartfortwo Spotted in Spy Shots

Recent spy shots have revealed a five-seat hybrid version of the smart fortwo, with no official word on equipment to power this new powertrain option. However, according to the parent company Groupe PSA's (formerly PSA Group) strategy for hybridization, this new car could be equipped with their 1.5T mHEV system.

Currently, there is less information available about the types of cars that can be equipped with this powertrain option. Based on the known variants of the present smart fortwo #5, all available four models are available in a hybrid-electric version and can have an optional rear-wheel drive and All-Wheel Drive configuration, within a price range of 23.99-36.80,000 euros.

Exterior Design

The design of this new powertrain-based car seems similar to that of the present smart fortwo #5. The frontal and rear fascias retain the same 'smart bubble' shape logic with LED accents integrated and fitted on either side.

For a comparison, we can see that as compared to the existing electric cars (smartfortwo #1), this new powertrain-based car also gets 5-spoke wheels replacing the ones present in the fortwo #1, along with an extra opening at both the tailgate doors - expectedly right of course being for refueling.

These parts make the interior look similar to the existing fortwo variants. The steering wheel has a three-spoked wheel layout, along with the usual middle screen connected to secondary display screen. Overall look-wise, there is no major change which should enhance the luxurious feel.
