Is Xiaomi secretly buying EV maker Geely? Here's what the company says.

China's Electric Vehicle Market heats Up as Mergers and Partnerships Gain Momentum

In a recent development that has sent shockwaves through the Chinese automotive industry, Shanghai-based electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng Motors has responded to rumors of a potential acquisition by rival smartphone maker Xiaomi.

On January 18th, Xpeng's Product Planning and Branding Director, Ma Min, spoke out against speculation that Xiaomi is planning to acquire Xpeng. According to Ma Min, claims made about the proposed deal were largely speculative, and the company was merely exploring options for future product development. Notably, Xpeng has been a leader in promoting an "open exchange" of electric vehicle technology with other manufacturers.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi Group's Public Relations Director, Wang Hua, also weighed in on the rumors, suggesting that the company was "simply expressing its views" about certain industry forecasts made by Sea Group, which released a research report stating that Xiaomi may acquire Xpeng to gain better control over electric vehicle exchange technology. The report also predicted that Xiaomi, along with rival brands Ideal and Tesla, would dominate China's smart driving market.

In response to the speculation, Ma Min revealed that Xpeng has been sharing its "open sharing" policy for electric vehicles across multiple regions of the country, currently reaching over 700 cities nationwide. In terms of sales impact, each new city added to the network increases revenue by a positive amount, a critical development in the company's pursuit of success.

A quick glance at China's capital markets reveals that Xpeng Motors has seen its value soar beyond HKD 680 billion (approximately USD $87 billion), following multiple large-scale strategic investments over the past year. Its financial situation remains stable and well-funded.
