BMW Group Dominates China's Luxury Car Market in 2024
In January, BMW Group revealed that it delivered 714,530 BMW and MINI vehicles to the Chinese market in 2024, making BMW the top luxury car brand in terms of annual sales. The M series family continued to see an uptick in demand, with the M2, M3, and M4 models ranking first in their respective segments.
BMW's core brand pillar, X Family, sustained its solid performance, with over 90,000 units delivered throughout the year. The 5 Series continues to post strong sales numbers, with over 10,000 vehicles sold in the fourth quarter alone.
Meanwhile, BMW and MINI electric vehicles saw a 7.7% year-over-year increase in sales, accounting for 15% of the company's overall sales in China. The newly launched electric MINI Cooper and MINI ACEMAN have gained significant traction within the MINI brand sales.
The BMW Group also announced its product lineup for 2025, with over 10 new models expected to hit the market, including the M Performance series and the revamped X3 Long Wheelbase model scheduled to launch in February. The next generation of BMW vehicles will feature an innovative operating system, developed primarily in China, which promises enhanced performance, advanced safety features, and seamless connectivity.
The company highlighted its commitment to putting drivers first, showcasing its latest operating system, which boasts an intuitive interface, a more natural voice assistant, and lightning-fast response times. Over 80% of users frequent the system regularly, while over 70% use the car's entertainment application.
BMW Group is set to team up with Chinese innovators to leverage AI and machine learning in areas such as humanoid interaction and advanced seatback technology by the end of 2025. Furthermore, BMW aims to further optimize its sales channels, improving the overall customer experience. The company also plans to enhance digitalization capabilities across all its dealership networks.
BMW's environmental commitment remains unwavering, with the company stating it has already exceeded 400,000 units delivered worldwide since 2019 when electric powertrains were adopted for production at their Chinese plants. In 2024, BMW utilized geothermal energy as a heat source in the Shen Yang Manufacturing Plant. The company reported an annual reduction in carbon emissions per vehicle of approximately 0.18 tons. Since 2023, all BMW vehicles sold in China have participated in recycling programs.
BMW Group continues to honor its "Family of the Nation" promise by partnering with various organizations across different sectors via philanthropic activities. From 2019, several initiatives were introduced as part of this responsibility initiative, such as training and educating parents on road safety with “BMW Kids Traffic Safety Exercises,” a program that spans over twenty years, as well as the "BMW Culture Trek" series, aimed at preserving non-material cultural heritage from 1996. Additionally, BMW's China Conservation Program was extended in 2021 following its launch in 2019.
