Chinese Smart Cars Are Suddenly Everywhere: A Look at Brands Beyond BYD
The world of car purchasing is becoming increasingly crowded, with some brands quickly catching on to the rising demand for smart cars within a budget of $10,000. Here’s a look at a few players in this space and their respective strengths.
BYD
The first brand that came to mind was BYD. 2025 marks a big year for them as they launched several new car models. All models include the "Eye" navigation system which includes various speed levels: highways & rapid roads or urban expressways, equipped with both high-end intelligent driving assistance as well as lower-cost options starting at $7.98 thousand.
BYD released three configuration variants of the DM-i / EV - one priced around 7.98k to 10.38k and another priced even more moderately at 10.98 k-12.98 k , the plug-in hybrid version is slightly different from it.
The new model has a similar overall appearance with a classic language in line with that of the previous Qin L DM-i . One notable change here is that the front headlight LED ring has been blackened and is now connected to middle console for aesthetic purposes. Rear section maintains its traditional “Chinese Knot” seal.
Inside, layout and feel are also more refined while retaining a professional atmosphere typical of BYD's. This also includes new center screen dimensions -12” large . The interior will be available in mid-tone cloud gray or gold tones only at the moment.
BYD's car offers a range of 55km on full electric plus another 120kms after charging, the 55% efficiency test is also higher compared to competitors. The exterior styling includes some interesting design pieces like new side air intakes, revised roof vents & better visibility through larger windshield.
On the other hand ,the EV-equipped model features a new design while still containing various driving assistance systems thanks to its advanced driver-assistance system.
In 2025 ,some brands are also bringing in similar products. Among them are Honda with its Prologis brand and also a couple of Hyundai related vehicles like NIO or even Rivian rivals.
These newer models boast many modern features, including safety technologies and user-friendly interfaces that are becoming increasingly important for potential buyers.
Note that BYD did not have any basic version for their Qin Plus.
