Lexus Establishes Pure Electric Vehicle and Battery Company in Shanghai, Plans for 2027 Production
Aimong to support China's green low-carbon development, Toyota has established a pure electric vehicle and battery company in Shanghai, jointly with the Shanghai Municipal Government. The new company will focus on developing and producing Lexus brand pure electric vehicles.
The Chinese government has outlined ambitious targets to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Toyota has long committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions as a corporate social responsibility, having launched its Toward a Sustainable Future in 2050 strategy.
As part of their efforts to implement "New Quality Production Force for Green Low Carbon Development," Toyota will continue its collaborative endeavors with partners such as Chery Automobile and Guangqi Automobile. The company has forged close ties with the Shanghai Municipal Government and plans to broaden its initiatives across regional areas, focusing on industries beyond automotive manufacturing, such as logistics networks, advanced industries, hydrogen energy, smart autonomous driving, battery recycling, and new technology applications.
Since Toyota's entry into China in 1964, through joint ventures and collaborations with partners like Chery Automobile and Guangqi Group, the company has supplied high-quality vehicles to meet local consumer demand. The new company is designed to mirror the expectations of Chinese customers in terms of quality and pricing speed, with a planned rollout of pure electric vehicles by 2027.
Toyota will leverage existing industrial capacities, logistics networks, talent resource chains, and markets within Shanghai and the triangle region to create Lexus brand's production standards, further driving innovation and progress in automotive manufacturing. By combining market demand knowledge and expertise in China with the country's growing need for environmentally friendly technologies, Toyota aims to develop and deliver leading-edge products that not only adhere to customer desires but also meet international performance expectations.
This new initiative marks an expansion of Toyota's commitment to "manufacture better cars," tailored to local consumption patterns through technology, products, and services.
