Renault Unveils Global Strategy with Boreal, an All-New Compact SUV
Renault, the French automotive manufacturer, has announced its plans for global expansion, focusing on the launch of a new compact SUV called the Boreal. The vehicle is designed specifically for markets outside Europe and will be crucial to the group's "2027 Global Development Plan".
According to officials, the name "Boreal" was inspired by the French word for "boreal", representing serenity and balance, while highlighting its connection with nature. This new car model is positioned as a C-level SUV in Renault's classification system, sitting between the Dacia Bigster series.
The Boreal has been designed with an internationalized product strategy, including collaboration with Chinese teams. The development process for this vehicle has been streamlined thanks to Renault's partnership with a Chinese team, which completed a car model in 16 months. Although details of the project remain unclear, it is rumored that Renault and its partner Maybach (from parent group Daimler) would work together on platform architecture.
The new Boreal SUV might feature both electric or hybrid power. Notably, a previous earnings report by Renault showed that their car division's revenue reached €101.28 billion in the first quarter of 2025, resulting in profits that grew by 3.7 per cent year-over-year. Overall, Renault has seen an increase in global sales and profits for 2025 Q1, with total automobile division revenue at €16.75 billion.
The Renault Group unveiled a range of new additions to its lineup, including the Alpin at 390 and an SUV based on the C-Platform targeting all markets; besides four different car models announced: the electric vehicle Renault 4 Electric, Dacia Bigster, Alpine A390, and the Boreal SUV. Furthermore, there would be two refreshed versions of old models by Renault Austral or Renault Espace.
In a development project, Renault has been looking to develop strong collaborations with other automotive companies in the future as well, such as working closely with Nissan.
